More fast food restaurants pull onions amid E. coli outbreak
SUMMARY: In response to a deadly E. coli outbreak linked to McDonald’s slivered onions, several fast food chains, including KFC, Taco Bell, and Pizza Hut, are removing fresh onions from their menus, although no illnesses have been reported at their locations. Nearly 50 people have fallen ill, prompting caution among consumers. Food safety expert Lynette Johnston emphasizes that while it’s wise to trace the source of ingredients, there’s no immediate need to avoid onions altogether. The outbreak is tied to Taylor Farms, a California-based supplier, which is voluntarily recalling some onion products as authorities continue to investigate the situation.
The latest group to pull onions from the menu were KFC, Taco Bell and Pizza Hut, all of whom are owned by Yum Brands.

Duke Energy promised to limit emissions at four new gas plants. It’s already back-tracking • NC Newsline
SUMMARY: Environmental advocates in North Carolina are upset after ten utilities, including Duke Energy, urged new EPA administrator Lee Zeldin to weaken coal ash and natural gas regulations. These rules protect air and water from toxic substances and mitigate climate change. The companies claimed stricter regulations threaten grid reliability and economic growth. Advocates argue that these regulations are vital for clean water, especially as unlined coal ash ponds can leak harmful chemicals into groundwater. The utilities also sought to roll back greenhouse gas rules affecting new gas plants. Critics emphasize the potential health risks these regulatory rollbacks could pose to communities.

Murphy: Bill needed to preserve Medicare for patients, physicians | North Carolina
SUMMARY: U.S. Rep. Dr. Greg Murphy of North Carolina is advocating for the Medicare Patient Access and Practice Stabilization Act to protect care access for Medicare beneficiaries, especially in rural areas. This follows a recent 2.83% cut in Medicare reimbursement rates, which are projected to lead to a 6.43% reduction in physician payments due to rising practice costs. Murphy highlights that ongoing cuts threaten private practice viability, forcing doctors to retire early or shift to larger systems. With a predicted shortage of 86,000 physicians by 2036, lawmakers emphasize the need for reforms to adequately reflect the costs of delivering care.
