Walker County Jail to get around-the-clock medical care
SUMMARY: The situation surrounding the death of former inmate Tony Mitchell at Walker County Jail has resulted in multiple jail employees agreeing to plead guilty, including nurse practitioner Daniel Weyers, who faces a misdemeanor charge for deprivation of rights. Mitchell’s death in January 2023 was ruled a homicide due to hypothermia and sepsis. Following this, Walker County leaders are increasing medical staffing from 16 to 24 hours a day to ensure inmates receive necessary healthcare, addressing a crucial need given that 85% of inmates test positive for illegal substances.
