Mississippi’s top lawmakers skip initial budget proposals
SUMMARY: The Joint Legislative Budget Committee discussed the budget estimate for the upcoming Legislative Session, but could not agree on a starting point for the state’s budget, leading to a deadlock with Gov. Tate Reeves. Legislative leaders advocated for a lower budget estimate, but Reeves believes it could erase support for the full elimination of the state income tax. Lt. Governor Delbert Hosemann expects an agreement to be made later in the 2024 Legislative Session. Budget writers will monitor the state’s economic performance to predict how much tax money might be available to spend. Legislators have reduced the state income tax in recent years, and Reeves wants to fully eliminate it.
