Mississippi’s top court says it won’t reconsider sex abuse conviction of former friar
SUMMARY: The Mississippi Supreme Court has refused to hear an appeal from a former Franciscan friar convicted in 2022 of sexual abuse at a Catholic school in the 1990s. Paul West was found guilty of sexual battery against a student at St. Francis of Assisi School in Greenwood, Mississippi and sentenced to 30 years in prison. The court of appeals had also upheld his conviction. West’s attorneys claimed that prosecutors failed to prove the victim’s age but the appeals court disagreed. The abuse took place over several years and West was extradited from Wisconsin to face charges in Mississippi. The school ultimately closed down due to the scandal and declining enrollment.
