Mississippi’s infant mortality rate reaches five-year high

SUMMARY: Mississippi has experienced a 900% increase in babies born with syphilis over the past six years. In response, the state Health Department has mandated that physicians test pregnant individuals for the disease. Mississippi was one of only six states in the US that did not previously require syphilis screenings during pregnancy. The leading causes of infant mortality in the country are congenital malformations, low birthweight, Sudden Unexpected Infant Death (SUID), unintentional injuries, and maternal complications. Mississippi has a high rate of premature births, a shortage of maternal health providers, and difficulties with low-income women accessing timely prenatal care. The state also lacks presumptive eligibility for pregnant women seeking Medicaid coverage and has not expanded Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act. Mississippi lawmakers recently extended health care coverage for mothers on Medicaid to one year postpartum, recognizing the connection between maternal and infant health. The Mississippi Delta has seen some of the highest rates of infant mortality, with 13.7 infant deaths per 1,000 births in 2021.
