Mississippi lawmakers working to remove Confederate statues from Washington
SUMMARY: Mississippi lawmakers are pushing to remove two Confederate statues, those of segregationists Jefferson Davis and James Z. George, from the U.S. Capitol’s Statuary Hall, which have stood since 1931. Democratic leaders proposed bills to replace the statues, either by establishing a commission to select new figures or by directly replacing them with icons like civil rights activist Fannie Lou Hamer and Hiram Revels, the first African American Congress member from Mississippi. House Minority Leader Robert Johnson III emphasizes the need to reshape Mississippi’s national narrative and reflect its diverse history in the selection of new representatives.

Mississippi House leaders file plan to eliminate income tax, slash grocery tax
SUMMARY: Mississippi House leaders introduced the “Build Up Mississippi Act” (House Bill 1), a comprehensive tax reform plan aimed at eliminating the state income tax over the next decade and significantly reducing grocery taxes. The bill proposes a $1 billion tax cut, reducing the income tax gradually from 4.7% in 2024 to 0% by 2037, and cutting grocery tax from 7% to 2.5% by 2036. To compensate local governments, a potential 1.5% increase on non-grocery items could raise the sales tax to 8.5%. The bill also reallocates lottery proceeds to support the public employees’ retirement system, aiming for stable funding amidst significant financial challenges.

Prominent Mississippi civil rights attorney prohibited from practicing law for one year
SUMMARY: Carlos Moore, a civil rights attorney from Grenada, has been suspended from practicing law in Mississippi for one year due to misconduct. The Mississippi Supreme Court found that he violated conduct rules by depositing $300,000 from a wrongful death settlement into his personal law account instead of the victim’s estate account. Moore claimed over $110,000 in legal fees from the settlement related to Jamaal Mallard’s death in a Jackson jail, but did not inform the victim’s brother about his share of the funds. Moore had previously faced calls for removal as a municipal court judge due to a pattern of misconduct.
