Mississippians encouraged to avoid heat-related illnesses
SUMMARY: AMR paramedics warn that high temperatures and humidity can be deadly, causing heat-related illnesses like heat exhaustion, sunburn, and dehydration. Early signs of heat exhaustion include lightheadedness, dizziness, and heavy sweating. High heat can also worsen pre-existing conditions, such as cardiac and respiratory issues. To stay safe, remain hydrated and avoid outdoor activities during peak heat hours. First aid for heat stroke involves removing the victim from the heat and cooling them immediately. AMR dispatchers are trained to guide callers on how to help until an ambulance arrives. Although AMR Central Mississippi hasn’t seen many heat-related calls yet, they expect an increase as summer progresses.
