Women’s rights advocates celebrate as Gov. Reeves signs paid parental leave bill into law
SUMMARY: Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves signed House Bill 1063 into law, establishing the “Mississippi State Employees Paid Parental Leave Act.” Starting January 1, 2026, eligible state employees with at least one year of service can take six weeks of paid leave (100% salary) for newborn or newly adopted children. While praised as a step forward, advocacy groups like the Mississippi Black Women’s Roundtable urge further action to expand paid leave to low-wage and part-time workers.
