SUMMARY: Most Republican Governors, including Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves, turned down Federal money to provide grocery help for low-income families with school-aged kids over the summer. Families with children in free or reduced-price school lunch programs would have received $40 per qualifying child for each of the three summer months. Mississippi is one of 14 states that turned down the funding, with around 324,000 eligible children in the state. Governor Reeves’s office called the program unnecessary big government, and the remaining holdouts are in 14 states, meaning another 10 million eligible kids live in states that turned down the funding.
