SUMMARY: The small town of Woodville, Mississippi, has seen a sudden surge in crime, with four homicides in one month—the highest count since Police Chief Lemuel Rutledge’s arrival in 2005. On May 22, Henry Dyer, a respected community member, was fatally shot, leading to the arrest of Eric Chisolm. Three days later, a juvenile was found shot after a car accident, resulting in Jontavious Green’s arrest. Two homicides from the previous month remain under investigation, one of which led to Letedry Earls’s arrest. The police department, short-staffed and underfunded, is seeking public cooperation and assistance from state agencies to address the violence. Community engagement events are planned to discuss public safety.

SUMMARY: James Williams III, a Mississippi man who served nearly two decades for the 2002 murders of his father and stepmother, died in a car crash in Rankin County. The accident on Highway 18 involved Williams’ 2009 Honda Civic and a 2019 GMC Sierra, resulting in his death at the scene. The other vehicle’s occupants, Curtis and Ruth Jones, were hospitalized. Williams, who faced life sentences for the murders, was paroled in 2023 after the U.S. Supreme Court deemed life sentences for minors unconstitutional.
