SUMMARY: Mississippi’s House Bill 1 proposes significant tax reforms, including a gradual reduction of income and grocery taxes from 7% to 2.5% over 10 years, starting with a drop to 4.5% in 2026. This could save families about $450 annually on groceries. However, a new 5% gas tax may increase fuel prices by 13 cents per gallon to provide stable funding for the Mississippi Department of Transportation. Local governments may add a 1.5% sales tax, raising total sales tax to 8.5% in certain areas. Lawmakers face a February deadline to balance tax relief with necessary revenue for local services and infrastructure.
