Mississippi Supreme Court: Lawsuit against public dollars going to private schools ‘lacks standing’
SUMMARY: The Mississippi Supreme Court, by a 7-2 majority, decided that Parents for Public Schools, Inc. (PPS) has no standing to challenge two bills that grant public funds to private schools. Represented by the ACLU, PPS argued that these bills violate the Mississippi Constitution, but the Court found no evidence that public education was adversely impacted. Despite an earlier ruling against private school funding by a Hinds County chancellor, the Court did not discuss the constitutionality of the funds’ allocation. Senate Bills 2780 and 3064 involve appropriating $10 million of federal COVID-19 relief to private schools as grants.

Gov. Tate Reeves working on plan to call special session after budget collapse
SUMMARY: Mississippi lawmakers left the state capitol without approving a budget, leaving Republican Gov. Tate Reeves to potentially call a special session before funding runs out on June 30, 2025. Reeves held a press conference to reassure residents, asserting that state operations would continue normally without an imminent threat of shutdown. He emphasized that disagreements were procedural, not about the $7 billion budget content, and encouraged calm among residents and agencies uncertain about funding. Reeves may address additional legislation during a special session, including mobile sports betting and school choice, while seeking to maintain efficiency and minimize costs.

Coastal Mississippi’s economic future is bright if we diversify
SUMMARY: Coastal Mississippi’s economy heavily relies on gaming, military bases, and government contracts, generating around $1.6 billion from casinos and substantial employment. Ingalls Shipbuilding and Stennis Space Center contribute significantly as well. However, dependence on these sectors poses vulnerability, especially with competition from online betting and emerging markets. To secure long-term growth, the region needs to diversify beyond gaming and embrace manufacturing, particularly in high-tech sectors. A collaborative development strategy could promote Coastal Mississippi as a hub for technology and logistics. Long-term planning and investment in workforce training are essential for sustainable economic resilience and future prosperity.
