Mississippi Supreme Court delays decision on whether to set execution date for man on death row
SUMMARY: The Mississippi Supreme Court has delayed ruling on setting an execution date for Willie Jerome Manning, who was convicted in 1994 on two counts of capital murder. The Court is holding the decision until it rules on Manning’s petition for post-conviction relief, based on newly discovered evidence and scientific developments undermining his conviction. Prosecutors say Manning was arrested after he tried to sell items belonging to the victims of the murder. The U.S. Justice Department found errors in FBI testimony about ballistics tests and hair analysis in the case, resulting in the delay of Manning’s execution in 2013. Manning’s attorneys are pleased that the Court is requiring the state to respond to his petition.
