Mississippi sees ‘substantial’ spike in COVID hospitalizations, CDC says
SUMMARY: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that COVID-19 hospitalizations and deaths continue to rise in the United States. Hospitalizations increased by 19% last week, and deaths rose by 21%. Only a few states saw a decrease in hospital admissions, while the others remained stable or experienced an increase. South Dakota had the highest spike in hospitalizations, with a 127% increase in just one week. A booster shot targeting the omicron variant is expected to be approved in September. Experts predict that cases and hospitalizations may increase with the start of the school year, followed by a larger surge in the late fall and winter. More information on booster shot eligibility is expected in the coming weeks from the FDA and CDC.

SUMMARY: Calhoun City Ward 2 Alderman Tony Herrod and Markus Hankins were charged with aggravated assault and strong-armed robbery. The incident took place on Sunday night at Calhoun City Elementary School, where the victim was chased, beaten, and had items stolen. Surveillance footage identified the suspects. The Calhoun County Sheriff's Office conducted the investigation upon request from Calhoun City police. The victim sustained broken ribs and has been released from the hospital. Both Herrod and Hankins were given a $10,000 bond and released from jail.

Some Mississippi legislative districts dilute Black voting power and must be redrawn, judges say
SUMMARY: Three federal judges have ordered Mississippi to redraw some legislative districts, asserting that the current ones dilute Black voters' power in three areas. The lawsuit, filed by the NAACP and Black residents in 2022, aims to ensure fair political representation for Black Mississippians. The court's decision mandates creating additional majority-Black Senate and House districts in specific counties. Such adjustments follow the 2020 census population changes. Attorney Tommie Cardin argued that Mississippi's current voter behavior is driven by party affiliation rather than race.
