Mississippi River Basin Panel visits IMMS to learn more on state’s marine environment
SUMMARY: The Mississippi River Basin panel is focused on preventing invasive species and understanding the interconnectedness of freshwater and marine environments. Recently, 35 members visited the Institute for Marine Mammal Studies to learn about the impact of freshwater activities on marine life, particularly concerning an algae bloom caused by the opening of the Bon Cary Spillway, which led to the death of 153 bottlenose dolphins. The panel aims to protect natural resources and ensure the health of the ecosystem, emphasizing the need for dredging the river to improve water flow and prevent flooding. Elizabeth Brown committed to reducing sediment entering the Lower Mississippi River Basin.
The focus of the visit was the algae bloom that occurred in the Mississippi Sound after the Corps of Engineers opened the Bonnet Carre Spillway.

The Dream Home Giveaway not only offers a chance to win a house but also supports the life-saving work at St. Jude.
Tickets for the home in Gulfport are $100, and proceeds benefit the St. Jude’s Children Hospital.
