Mississippi reports first West Nile Virus case of 2024
SUMMARY: Officials from the Mississippi State Department of Health confirmed the first human case of West Nile Virus for 2024 in Rankin County. The CDC states that West Nile Virus is the leading mosquito-borne disease in the continental U.S., with cases peaking during mosquito season from summer to fall. In 2023, there were 37 reported cases in Mississippi without any deaths, while 2022 saw seven cases with one fatality. To protect themselves, residents are advised to use recommended mosquito repellent, cover exposed skin, remove standing water, and maintain window screens. Proper home maintenance, like repairing leaks and cleaning gutters, is also crucial.

Closing arguments begin in Carly Gregg trial
SUMMARY: Closing arguments began on September 20 in the trial of Carly Gregg, a Rankin County teen accused of killing her mother, Ashley Smylie, in March 2024. Prosecutors presented expert witnesses highlighting inconsistencies in her statements, particularly regarding hallucinations prior to the shooting. The defense rested its case earlier, and Gregg faces serious charges, including first-degree murder and attempted murder, with a possible life sentence if convicted. The court denied her motion to transfer the case to Youth Court due to her admission of marijuana use prior to the incident. Gregg, held on a $1 million bond, pled not guilty.
