Mississippi reports 14 human cases of West Nile Virus
SUMMARY: Fourteen cases of the West Nile Virus have been reported in Mississippi in 2023. The cases were spread across various counties in the state. The West Nile virus is the leading cause of mosquito-borne disease in the United States and occurs during mosquito season, which starts in the summer and continues through fall. Mississippi had seven cases with one death in 2022, the first death reported since 2017. Measures to protect oneself during mosquito season include using mosquito repellent, covering exposed skin, avoiding mosquito-prone areas, removing standing water, and maintaining a clean environment to prevent mosquito breeding.

New Ackerman police chief investigates plane crash in Choctaw
