Mississippi receives more than 11,000 absentee ballots ahead of primary

SUMMARY: As of July 24, over 11,000 absentee ballots have been received ahead of Mississippi’s 2023 Primary Election. A total of 17,218 absentee ballots have been requested, 16,660 have been sent, and 11,313 have been received. County Circuit Clerks are consistently processing requests for absentee ballots, leading to a difference between the number requested and the number sent. Absentee ballots will be accepted or rejected by the resolution board, with the actual number of accepted or rejected ballots determined after the election. Mississippians can track their absentee ballots using the My Election Day ballot tracker. Mail-in absentee ballots must be postmarked by Election Day and received within five business days to count. County election officials can begin processing absentee ballots at 7 am on Election Day, with tabulation taking place at 7 pm. Man shot while helping with stalled vehicle in Jackson

SUMMARY: A man was shot in Jackson, Mississippi, while attempting to assist a person with a stalled vehicle on State Street at Beasley Road around 4:00 p.m. on November 20. Detective Tommie Brown reported that the victim was working on the vehicle when the suspect approached, questioned him, and then opened fire. The assailant fled the scene in a vehicle. Fortunately, the victim sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a local hospital.
