Mississippi public schools report lower chronic absenteeism rate in 2022-23

SUMMARY: Chronic absenteeism in Mississippi public schools has decreased, according to the state’s Department of Education. In the 2022-23 school year, 23.9% of students were chronically absent, compared to 28% the previous year. Chronic absenteeism is defined as missing 10% or 18 days of school for any reason. The decrease was seen across all grade levels, with the highest rate in grade 12 at 39.5%. The COVID-19 pandemic was believed to be a major factor in the higher rates in 2021-22. The Department of Education has launched an attendance awareness campaign to combat chronic absenteeism.
