Canton family reunion mass shooter sentenced for murder
SUMMARY: George Alton Smith, 32, has pled guilty to second-degree murder and aggravated assault after a shooting at a family reunion in June 2023, where he shot multiple attendees. He was sentenced to 40 years in prison without parole. The attack at the Anderson Masonic Lodge resulted in one death immediately and another from complications later. Witnesses reported Smith entered and fired indiscriminately before fleeing. Investigators found shell casings matching those in Smith’s truck, leading to his arrest. Smith had no known ties to the victims, and the motive for the shooting remains unclear, leaving the community in shock.
