Mississippi maternal deaths are on the rise

SUMMARY: A report from the Mississippi Maternal Mortality Review Committee shows that maternal deaths are increasing in the state, with 80% of these deaths being preventable. Black, non-Hispanic women have a pregnancy-related mortality rate four times higher than White, non-Hispanic women. Cardiovascular disease and hypertension are the top contributors to maternal mortality. The committee recommends Medicaid expansion for rural hospitals, improved telehealth services, communication between healthcare providers, education on maternal early warning signs, and paid maternity leave. The report also highlights the need for better access to critical care and providers in rural areas. Maternal mortality rates have been increasing nationally as well.
