Mississippi marks 60th anniversary of Freedom Summer

At the Two Mississippi Museums, activist Dave Dennis, Sr. emphasized the importance of education, voting, and activism. Dennis, a co-founder of the Council of Federated Organizations and a Freedom Summer coordinator, recalled the unity of Black and white Americans against voter discrimination. He referenced the brutal murders of Michael Schwerner, James Chaney, and Andrew Goodman by the Ku Klux Klan. Dennis urged ongoing activism and lamented the closure of schools and erasure of history. He will speak in Indianola about his book, “The Movement Made Us.”
