Mississippi lawmakers send bill restricting where transgender people can use bathroom to governor
SUMMARY: The Mississippi legislature passed the Securing Areas for Females Effectively and Responsibly (SAFER) Act after reviving it with a resolution allowing a vote beyond the deadline. Introduced by Republican Sen. Josh Harkins, this bill aims to limit transgender individuals’ access to bathrooms and locker rooms corresponding to their gender identity. Despite critics likening it to discriminatory Jim Crow laws, the act received strong GOP support. Attorney General Lynn Fitch applauded its passage. Governor Tate Reeves is expected to sign it into law, following previous actions against transgender athletes’ participation in women’s sports and gender-affirming care for minors.

Mississippi College president weighs in on incoming bicentennial, decision to change school’s name

SUMMARY: Bricen Rivers has pleaded not guilty to capital murder, vehicle theft, and tampering with evidence related to the death of his ex-girlfriend, Lauren Johansen, whose body was found in a car trunk in Mississippi. Rivers fled the scene before his capture during a manhunt. The murder is believed to have occurred in Forrest County, and the case was transferred there. Rivers had previously been imprisoned for beating and kidnapping Johansen but was out on bond due to an administrative mistake. Johansen’s father, Lance, is advocating for “Lauren’s Law” to prevent bond eligibility for violent offenders. Rivers’ trial is set for June 25, 2025.
