Mississippi lawmakers advance bill to legalize online sports betting
SUMMARY: A proposed bill in the Mississippi Legislature would legalize online sports betting in the state, aiming to reduce the thriving black market and generate millions in tax revenue. The bill would allow mobile sports betting while requiring companies to work with brick-and-mortar gambling establishments. The introduction of online sports betting could hamper illegal offshore betting sites while providing an opportunity for licensed gambling companies. However, concerns have been raised about the impact on smaller rural casinos. Similar legislation is active in other states, with Mississippi representing 5% of the illegal betting market. The bill is awaiting consideration by the full House.
