SUMMARY: Mississippi has joined 11 other states to file a lawsuit against the NCAA over its transfer eligibility rule, which restricts student-athletes who transfer schools from playing immediately. The rule currently requires college athletes who transfer a second time within Division I to wait a year before they can compete, which is seen as an illegal impediment to their rights to control their education and profit from their likeness. A preliminary injunction has temporarily stopped the enforcement of the rule, allowing athletes to play without waiting, and the court case seeks to overturn the rule indefinitely. The effects have already been felt in sports at Mississippi schools, with athletes benefiting from immediate eligibility post-transfer. This lawsuit marks a notable antitrust challenge by state attorneys general against the NCAA.

SUMMARY: Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch, along with 38 other attorneys general, is urging Congress to ban pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) from owning pharmacies. Growing concerns among small pharmacy owners and consumers highlight PBMs’ influence on drug pricing, which can harm independent pharmacies and access to healthcare, particularly in rural areas. Fitch argues that PBMs leverage their power to manipulate drug prices and impose unfair terms on pharmacies. A recent push for legislation to regulate PBMs and prevent practices like spread pricing has stalled. The attorneys general’s letter to Congress seeks to protect consumers and small businesses from PBM exploitation.
