Mississippi Insight for Nov. 12, 2023: Recapping the 2023 Governor’s Race
SUMMARY: Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves has secured a second term after a low-turnout election against challenger Brandon Presley. Reeves won with 52% of the vote, while Presley received 47%. Observations and analysis of the election were provided by Russ Latino, Senator John Horn, and former Republican Governor Haley Barbour. Milstep’s Professor Eric Schmidt shared insights into how young voters perceive the current political climate. All eight Republican state officers in Mississippi were re-elected. Turnout was lower than the 2019 race between Reeves and Jim Hood. In his concession, Presley addressed voters with gratitude and spoke of a campaign aimed at unifying the state. Governor Reeves spoke at his watch party about focusing on job creation, workforce development, lower taxes, and furthering Mississippi’s progress during his second term. The Hines County election commission took responsibility for ballot shortages due to ordering errors, while Secretary of State Michael Watson discussed the need for better ballot management.
