SUMMARY: The Mississippi House passed the Inspire Act to replace the Mississippi Adequate Education Program (MAEP). The new formula mandates a minimum base student cost of $6,650 and provides more funding for students with disabilities, English language learners, and low-income students. Proponents believe it is simpler and more equitable than MAEP. If passed and signed into law, full funding of this formula would be increased by $241 million. The bill will now move to the Mississippi Senate for further consideration. Other issues surviving in the Mississippi Legislature include school funding and ballot initiatives.
