Mississippi Heroes seeking help to gift Biloxi veteran accessibility ramp for home
SUMMARY: A nonprofit organization, Mississippi Heroes, is helping retired Army veteran Skip Williamson, whose life changed after a fall last year led to reliance on a walker and wheelchair. Living with his daughter, Skip struggles with dangerous steps that pose risks for further injury. The nonprofit aims to build a ramp for him, but there is a significant waiting list of 60 individuals needing similar assistance. Executive director Katherine Sutton urges the community to contribute through funding and materials to expedite these projects. Those interested in supporting Williamson can contact the organization at Mississippi Heroes’ email.

NEW DETAILS: Accused Biloxi cop murderer not competent to stand trial
SUMMARY: Darien Atkinson, charged with the capital murder of Biloxi police officer Robert McKian, has been deemed not competent to stand trial. A judge’s ruling stems from evaluations indicating Atkinson’s mental health has worsened over the past two years, with psychosis and symptoms consistent with schizophrenia. He has been at a state mental hospital since March 2023, showing resistance to assessments and making bizarre claims about a supposed “Matrix” program. Despite disappointment from McKian’s loved ones, officials remain hopeful that charges will not be dismissed if Atkinson’s mental state improves, allowing for a future trial.

Atkinson will continue to be held in a maximum security building at the Mississippi State Hospital in Whitfield.
