Mississippi governor signs “Buddy’s Law”

SUMMARY: Mississippi, an animal cruelty bill called Buddy’s Law has officially been signed by Governor Tate Reeves. The law aims to protect animals from harm and was named after Buddy, a Labrador Retriever mix who suffered severe burns inflicted by a 12-year-old. Buddy’s remarkable recovery, including multiple surgeries and months of bandages, has captured the attention and support of many. State Senator Angela Hill led the efforts in the legislature, ensuring that specific acts of torture, such as burning and drowning, will be evaluated and treated accordingly for those responsible, particularly children. The journey to pass Buddy’s Law was challenging but ultimately successful, thanks to the generosity of the Tunica Humane Society, MSU’s College of Veterinary Medicine, and other supporters who donated to Buddy’s medical expenses. The law will come into effect on July 1st.
