Mississippi experiencing OB-GYN shortage
SUMMARY: Mississippi is facing a shortage of OB-GYNs amidst an ongoing healthcare crisis. The state only has five OB-GYN specialists per 10,000 childbearing women, with some counties having as few as two. This shortage is costing mothers critical healthcare access, as timely access to healthcare is crucial for screenings, pregnancy, and overall health. The shortage is particularly concerning in a state that already has high rates of infant mortality and premature births. The Delta region, in particular, is greatly affected by the lack of obstetrical care and diminishing number of OB-GYNs.
