SUMMARY: Mississippi has amended its restrictions on absentee voting assistance for disabled or illiterate individuals after a federal judge blocked the initial law, citing a violation of the Voting Rights Act. The revised legislation now aligns with the federal act, clarifying who qualifies as a caregiver and can aid in ballot submission. Disability Rights Mississippi and the League of Women Voters, among others, initially sued the state over the restrictive list of eligible ballot helpers. Although the 2023 law aimed to prevent “ballot harvesting,” critics said it impeded legitimate assistance. The update ensures broader access to absentee voting while adhering to federal guidelines.

SUMMARY: Amid a bribery investigation in Jackson, Mississippi, Councilman Kenneth Stokes is urging Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba to take a leave of absence and consider a plea deal after pleading not guilty to federal corruption charges. DeSoto County District Attorney Matthew Barton described the act as reckless and cowardly, emphasizing that Saulsberry was a promising young man whose life was senselessly cut short. McDaniel became intoxicated at the party and, after a confrontation with the host, retrieved a firearm and fired into the crowd, fatally striking Saulsberry, who was merely an innocent bystander. SUMMARY: The Southwestern Athletic Conference is investigating claims that Jackson State gained access to private practice film of Arkansas-Pine Bluff prior to their November 2 game, which Jackson State won 41-3. Allegations arose from a UAPB player’s report about a Jackson State player discussing film access. The inquiry points to a former walk-on, whose account was traced to Jackson, as the potential source but he denied any wrongdoing. Jackson State officials acknowledged the investigation but stated no violations were found. This comes amidst distractions for the Tigers, including seven player suspensions from a recent altercation.
