Mississippi doctor confirmed dead following plane crash in Arkansas
SUMMARY: Federal authorities are investigating a plane crash in Clinton, Arkansas, that resulted in the death of 68-year-old Robert Phillip Mathis, a doctor from Mississippi. The crash occurred on Tuesday around 2:27 p.m. after Mathis experienced a “trim issue” shortly after departing Fayetteville. A small fire erupted post-accident but was contained. The Federal Aviation Administration had alerted dispatchers about a plane facing engine failure before the crash. Mathis, who was alone and previously a surgeon at Magnolia Health Center, was flying a Beech 58 Baron owned by Mathis Timber LLC. The National Transportation Safety Board is involved in the investigation.

Mississippi man attacks deputy moments after being convicted of sex crimes
SUMMARY: Franky Lee Lovern, Sr., a Mississippi man previously convicted of sex crimes, faced additional charges after attacking a deputy following his trial. Video footage shows Lovern attempting to disarm the deputy while being escorted out, resulting in injuries for both. Lovern has been charged with aggravated assault, attempted escape, and resisting arrest, among others. He was treated for injuries sustained during the incident. His sentencing for the sexual battery conviction is set for January 6, 2025, with the new charges addressed in Rankin County Court.

Inmate who escaped Lowndes County Jail sentenced to 32 years
SUMMARY: Terry Brooks, a 44-year-old inmate, was sentenced to 32 years in prison after escaping from Lowndes County Jail on Halloween 2023. He pleaded guilty to escape and auto burglary charges related to his jailbreak, alongside another inmate. They managed to cut a section of a window and crawl through the prison’s ventilation system. While his accomplice was quickly recaptured, Brooks attempted to steal a car before being captured three days later with assistance from law enforcement. His sentence included 12 years for the escape and auto burglary, and 20 years for unrelated cocaine possession.

Mississippi ranked as one of the spookiest states in America
