Coastal leaders eyeing labeling laws to remedy public distrust amid seafood misbranding scandal
SUMMARY: A seafood misbranding scheme involving popular Biloxi restaurant Mary Mahoney’s Old French House has tarnished the Mississippi Gulf Coast’s food scene. Co-owner Anthony Cvitanovich was sentenced for selling 58,750 pounds of imported fish as local varieties. A subsequent study by SeaD Consulting revealed that 82% of local restaurants mislabel seafood. Chef Austin Sumrall of White Pillars Restaurant stressed the importance of transparency in restoring consumer trust. While neighboring Louisiana passed laws on imported seafood labeling, a similar bill failed in Mississippi in 2020. Efforts are underway to introduce new labeling laws in the upcoming legislative session.
