Mississippi delegation calls for Medgar Evers to be awarded Presidential Medal of Freedom
SUMMARY: The entire Mississippi delegation is urging President Joe Biden to award the Presidential Medal of Freedom to civil rights leader Medgar Evers. Mississippi lawmakers sent a joint letter requesting that Evers, who was assassinated in 1963, be considered for the honor. Evers played a significant role in the Civil Rights Movement, serving as the NAACP’s first field secretary in Mississippi and organizing efforts to end racial discrimination and promote equal rights. The lawmakers argue that Evers’ dedication to civil rights and his sacrifice make him deserving of the highest U.S. civilian honor.

3 Mississippi hospitals approved for demonstration program intended to stave off closures
SUMMARY: U.S. Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith announced that Greenwood Leflore, Magee General, and Wayne General hospitals in Mississippi were approved for the Rural Hospital Demonstration program. This initiative, which aims to support rural healthcare sustainability, will provide these hospitals with better federal reimbursements to help keep them open. Hyde-Smith, alongside Sen. Roger Wicker and Rep. Bennie Thompson, worked to secure this approval, particularly for Greenwood Leflore, a hospital central to Mississippi’s rural healthcare challenges. The program, established in 2004, helps small hospitals with cost-based reimbursements, improving their financial stability and ability to offer quality care.
