Mississippi congressman pledges federal funds to repurpose closing Jackson public schools

SUMMARY: Lawmakers in Washington, D.C. have offered federal funds to the Jackson Public School District in Mississippi to repurpose 16 schools that are set to close due to declining enrollment. Congressman Bennie Thompson suggested that the vacant buildings could be transformed into community centers, health and wellness centers, or senior living facilities. Thompson also stated that he can help the district identify state and local funds in addition to federal dollars. The JPS has lost around 8,500 students since the 2015-16 academic year, leading to the potential closure of the 16 schools. The final plan will be voted on by the board on Dec. 5.

Bricen Rivers pleads not guilty to murder of ex-girlfriend Lauren Johansen
