The Mississippi Braves and Diamond Baseball Holdings have announced that $1 from every ticket sold from this weekend’s opening series against the Biloxi Shuckers will be donated to victims of the March 24 tornadoes that wrecked portions of the state.

Rolling Fork residents will also be honored on-field during Friday’s opening night pregame festivities, with Marlon Nichols, a former little league and pony league coach, and Britt Williamson, the pastor of First Baptist Church of Rolling Fork, throwing out ceremonial first pitches.

Nichols and Williamson will be recognized alongside Andy Anderson, the President and CEO of the Bank of Anguilla, whose Rolling Fork location was damaged by the tornado.

In addition, the Atlanta Braves Foundation has agreed to match the Mississippi Braves donation. The M-Braves are partnering with the Red Cross to ensure these funds will be used where the need is greatest.

SUMMARY: Following the tragic death of 18-year-old Greyson Huff in a crash at the intersection of Highway 18 and Sunset Drive in Brandon, Mississippi, the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) has announced safety improvements. These enhancements include rumble strips, a new flashing LED stop sign, and flashing intersection warning signs. Despite community requests for a traffic signal, state engineers determined it was not warranted due to data indicating that signals can make intersections more dangerous. MDOT aims to improve visibility and reduce speeds, with the enhancements expected to be completed next week.

Mississippi expects only a small growth in state budget

Published

on

www.wjtv.com – The Associated Press – 2024-11-14 12:32:00

SUMMARY: Mississippi’s budget for the year starting July 1 is projected to grow by less than 1%, with an estimated $7.6 billion in the general fund. This is slower growth compared to previous years, due to flat sales tax collections and a drop in corporate income tax revenues. While income tax and insurance premium tax collections rose, the state’s economic outlook is more conservative. Governor Tate Reeves advocates for phasing out the income tax, while Lt. Governor Delbert Hosemann favors reducing grocery sales tax. Lawmakers will finalize budget recommendations in December, with debates set for the 2024 legislative session.
