Mississippi Agricultural Commissioner drops by Pine Belt for a visit
SUMMARY: Commissioner of Agriculture Andy Gibson attended the grand opening of Mississippi Farmers Meats at Old 11 Plaza in Hattiesburg to support a new farm-to-table business. This store sells locally farmed and processed meats, fresh produce, and dairy products. It's the second location, the first being in Summit, at a meat processing facility that has been operational since 2000. The initiative received state support due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which highlighted the need for local meat processing. The owner, Cassed, aims to open 10 locations in Mississippi and Louisiana, with potential future sites in downtown Hattiesburg and Ocean Springs.

Wastewater operators: Please keep sludge out of drains
SUMMARY: Water operators in the Pine Belt are cautioning residents about washing fats, oils, and grease (FOG) down drains, which is a leading cause of sewer issues. Wastewater Digest identifies items like butter and salad dressing as culprits. Delaney Dukes from WDS followed Glendale Utility District's James Pierce to inspect lift stations clogged with hardened FOG, which block sewer lines and create maintenance problems. This hardened grease can also clog home pipes, leading to costly plumbing repairs. Pierce urges the community to dispose of FOG in trash containers instead of drains to prevent such issues statewide.
