Mississippi advocates on Supreme Court taking up abortion pill case

SUMMARY: The legality of the abortion pill Mifepristone is in limbo due to conflicting federal court orders. The Supreme Court is now involved to provide clarity on the issue. Mifepristone was approved by the FDA in 2000 and its prescription requirements have been expanded since 2016, allowing for telemedicine and shipping to patients up to 10 weeks pregnant. The Supreme Court will not be deciding on the original approval of the drug, but rather on whether the FDA followed its own rules in expanding the prescription ability. Anti-abortion rights advocates argue that the current policy endangers pregnant women, while pro-abortion rights advocates believe Mifepristone is safe and effective. The pill is illegal in Mississippi, but still available in other states pending the Supreme Court’s decision.
