Milton becomes Category 3 storm ahead of landfall

SUMMARY: As Hurricane Milton approaches landfall in Florida, images show wave activity at Sarasota and Clearwater Beach. The storm’s wind strength has diminished, but its size has increased, with tropical storm-force winds now extending 250 miles. The eyewall is expected to make landfall between 8 PM and midnight tonight, with significant and strong winds anticipated along the I-4 corridor. Storm surge will be worst south of Tampa, particularly affecting Venice and Fort Myers. In Georgia, modest storm surge and tropical storm winds are expected. Locally, temperatures will drop to the 50s overnight, with sunny weather ahead.

HBCUs receive $18 million grant from health giant

Nearly $10M spent in U.S. House District 14 | Georgia

In a quarter of Georgia counties, trained prison inmates are firefighters on the job

Amid a firefighter shortage, five select inmates from the Georgia Diagnostic Prison have been trained and certified as firefighters, living at the station instead of prison cells. This program gives inmates a second , allowing them to gain skills and employment opportunities after serving their time. Chief BJ Maddox supports this initiative, which operates in 35 counties and responds to about 3,000 calls annually, emphasizing redemption and community service for those striving to reform.

The program allows certain inmates to become certified firefighters while serving their time behind bars and respond to calls in the community.
