Mississippi farm industry leaders fear future amid potential international trade war
SUMMARY: Donald Trump’s tariffs on Mexico, Canada, and China have raised concerns for Mississippi’s agricultural industry, which contributes $9 billion annually to the state’s economy. Farmers fear the potential impact of trade disputes, especially as Mississippi’s top trade partners are Mexico, Canada, and China. Though a temporary pause on tariffs has been negotiated with Mexico and Canada, concerns remain about the tariffs’ future impact, especially on potash and agricultural machinery. Additionally, U.S. farmers face lending difficulties, with tightening loan criteria amidst poor economic returns. Mississippi lawmakers, including Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith, are working on solutions to support farmers, such as drafting a new Farm Bill.

Mississippi State scientist makes ‘hopping’ discovery with 16 new grasshopper species
SUMMARY: JoVonn Hill, an assistant professor and director at Mississippi State University’s Entomological Museum, recently discovered 16 new grasshopper species while researching thorny scrubs in desert areas of the U.S. and Mexico. This finding expands the known species of Agroecotettix from three to 19. Hill believes these grasshoppers underwent isolation and speciation during the Pleistocene Epoch, similar to species in the Rocky Mountains. His team will sequence DNA from the specimens to estimate divergence timing and assess the impact of climate change on these species. Hill emphasizes the importance of exploring biodiversity for conservation purposes.
