SUMMARY: JoVonn Hill, an assistant professor and director at Mississippi State University’s Entomological Museum, recently discovered 16 new grasshopper species while researching thorny scrubs in desert areas of the U.S. and Mexico. This finding expands the known species of Agroecotettix from three to 19. Hill believes these grasshoppers underwent isolation and speciation during the Pleistocene Epoch, similar to species in the Rocky Mountains. His team will sequence DNA from the specimens to estimate divergence timing and assess the impact of climate change on these species. Hill emphasizes the importance of exploring biodiversity for conservation purposes.
