Military’s Ospreys are cleared to return to flight, 3 months after latest fatal crash in Japan
SUMMARY: After a fatal crash in Japan, the Osprey aircraft, crucial to U.S. military missions, has been approved to return to flight. The crash led to fleet-wide grounding due to unprecedented part failure. Officials implemented new safety measures, inspections, and flight restrictions before clearing the Osprey. Despite ongoing investigations and concerns about safety, the decision to resume flights has been criticized. The proprotor gearbox has been a recurring trouble spot, with previous incidents of component failures. The investigation is ongoing, and additional safety controls may be relaxed based on test results. The military plans to address issues and retrain crews before resuming normal operations.
