MHSAA: High school football teams can push kickoff back due to extreme heat
SUMMARY: The Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) has announced that public school football game times can be pushed back from 7 to 8 p.m. if both teams agree. This flexibility is due to the extreme heat the state is currently experiencing. MHSAA executive director Ricky Neaves stated that this opportunity to change game times is only for week one, unless otherwise announced. He also emphasized the importance of having officials and plenty of water available on the sidelines. Several games have already been moved to an 8 p.m. start time. Additionally, UMMC will offer an injury clinic for high school football players on Friday nights.

Bird flu confirmed in flock of Greene County chickens
SUMMARY: Officials have confirmed that a chicken flock from a commercial breeder in Greene County, Mississippi, has tested positive for H5N1 avian influenza (bird flu). The Mississippi Board of Animal Health noted that the poultry poses no food safety risk when handled and cooked correctly. The affected premises are quarantined, and the flock has been depopulated to prevent disease spread, with no birds entering the food system. This is the first case of highly pathogenic avian influenza in Mississippi’s commercial poultry since spring 2023. Bird flu has been detected in migratory waterfowl, and poultry owners are urged to enhance biosecurity measures.

Free gift or not? Mississippi police warn of ‘brushing’ scam during holiday season
SUMMARY: Mississippi police are warning about a holiday scam called “brushing,” which is becoming more prevalent as package deliveries rise in December. This scam involves recipients receiving unexpected packages accompanied by a QR code that claims to reveal the sender’s identity. Scanning this QR code can compromise personal information, leading to potential theft. Victims may receive items with little to no information about the sender, including claims related to Amazon. Officials advise against scanning any unfamiliar QR codes and recommend reporting such packages. Awareness is key to protecting personal data this holiday season, according to police.
