MHP reminds motorists to drive safely around school buses
SUMMARY: As school resumes, Mississippi drivers must be vigilant around school buses, as over 500 accidents occur annually in the state. The Lowndes County School District operates approximately 35 buses daily, urging drivers to stay alert during morning and afternoon routes. Highway Patrol Sergeant Derrick Beckom emphasizes that drivers often need time to adapt to the reintroduction of school buses after summer, which can lead to dangerous situations. To enhance safety, drivers are encouraged to slow down, allow extra travel time, and adhere to laws against passing stopped buses. Local authorities will increase patrols to ensure bus safety.
