SUMMARY: Business owners are struggling to bring experienced employees back to work after the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The leisure and hospitality sectors, including hotels and restaurants, have been hit particularly hard. State economist Corey Miller notes that the state is still recovering, with these sectors 5% below pre-pandemic employment levels. Some businesses, like Pig and Pint, are having trouble finding workers, with many applicants not showing up for interviews or even their first day of work. To combat this, businesses are considering increasing hourly wages to attract and retain employees. Scott Jackson of Pig and Pint is paying up front $7.25 an hour before tips, while non-tipped employees make $11 to $17 an hour based on experience.

SUMMARY: Local shoppers in Tupelo are hopeful for a Target store after years of anticipation. Target filed plans in September for a store in the Barnes Crossing area near North Gloster Street and Interstate 22. The Tupelo City Council recently approved an agreement to incentivize the retailer, including infrastructure improvements to alleviate traffic. While some community members express excitement about the shopping options, Target has not confirmed its plans for Tupelo, as its future store openings do not currently include the city. Despite recent mixed earnings reports, company officials remain optimistic about their long-term prospects.

The City of Tupelo is now playing the waiting game for a possible Target store.
