Conservation Society worries lawsuit to stop ITC demolition could be derailed by ‘lawyer tricks’
SUMMARY: The Conservation Society of San Antonio is concerned that demolition of the former Institute of Texan Cultures building may continue after a section of its wall was taken down. Their legal effort to halt the demolition has been delayed until next week. UTSA and the City of San Antonio claim sovereign immunity, which prevents them from being sued. A judge ruled that jurisdiction issues must be resolved first, with a hearing scheduled for Monday. The Conservation Society fears that without a court order, the demolition will proceed, possibly bypassing legal review and delaying the lawsuit for months.

An attempt to block further demolition of the former Institute of Texan Cultures building in court will be delayed until at least next week.

Texas Senate passes bill to speed up evictions, cite ‘squatter horror stories’
SUMMARY: A Texas Senate bill, SB 38, aims to expedite evictions of suspected squatters by requiring civil courts to act within 10-21 days of a property owner filing for eviction. Authored by Senator Paul Bettencourt, the bill targets the current system, which he argues rewards trespassers and delays property owners’ rights. The bill includes a swift eviction process and allows landlords to file complaints in adjacent counties. Tenants can appeal the eviction within five days but must provide a bond or evidence of financial hardship. The bill now moves to the House for consideration, with Lt. Governor Dan Patrick supporting it.
