Meridian native Jamal Roberts advances to ‘American Idol’ top 20 with gospel rendition
SUMMARY: For the third consecutive year, a Mississippian has reached the top 20 of American Idol. Jamal Roberts, an elementary PE teacher from Meridian, secured a fan vote spot in season 23. Previous contestants include Jennifer Jeffries, who also reached the top 20 last season, and Zachariah Smith and Colin Stough, who made it to the top five in season 21. Roberts performed “Forever” by Jason Nelson, impressing judges Carrie Underwood, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan with his talent. The results for who advances to the top 14 will be revealed on Monday at 7 p.m. CT, with fan voting open until 8 a.m. CT.

SUMMARY: Southern Miss women’s golf made history by securing its first individual and team titles at the 2025 Sun Belt Championship. Senior Momoka Ando won the individual championship, finishing with a score of 3-under and becoming the first Golden Eagle to qualify for the NCAA Regional. The team clinched a spot in match play, defeating Coastal Carolina and then edging past Georgia Southern with Ando’s crucial putt on hole 17 to secure the team title. Ole Miss also celebrated its first individual champion as Caitlyn Macnab won the SEC Championship. Both teams await their NCAA Tournament destinations, to be announced on April 23.
