Meridian Community College’s Nursing Pinning ceremony
SUMMARY: Meridian Community College hosted its graduation ceremonies today, starting with the nursing pinning ceremony. The associate degree nursing program saw all students receiving scholarships and five students inducted into the Honor Society. Each graduate shared their reasons for choosing nursing, such as caring for a mother with cancer. Nursing was ultimately where they felt at home and believed God needed them to be. The American Nurses Association states that the demand for nurses is high and will continue to grow as the population ages. Nursing school is described as not for the weak, but for those who have worked hard to pursue their passion.

Heidelberg VFD receives $10,000 grant
SUMMARY: The Heidelberg Volunteer Fire Department is expanding its fleet with a $10,000 grant from State Farm’s Good Neighbor Firefighter Safety Program, just in time for National Fire Prevention Week. The funding will help the department purchase equipment for a new pumper truck, which they ordered in January 2023 for $320,000. Chief Prince Henley notes that while the truck will arrive soon, it won’t be fully equipped, requiring transfers from older trucks. Many of their vehicles exceed the typical 15-year lifespan, leading to costly repairs. The department has already received over 254 calls this year, emphasizing the need for support in small towns.

U.S. 84 east in Jones County has seen nearly a dozen accidents in past two weeks
SUMMARY: Jones County law enforcement reports an uptick in vehicle crashes along Highway 84, with Mississippi Highway Patrol responding to 11 incidents in the last two weeks. Many crashes result from driver distractions, like cell phone use and speeding over the 65 mph limit. Fire departments often arrive first at accident scenes, noting that high-impact collisions usually indicate excessive speed as a factor. Recent crashes have led to severe injuries, prompting lane closures and increased pressure on emergency responders, who are currently operating at reduced manpower. Authorities urge drivers to minimize distractions and adhere to speed limits for safety.
