Mercy Cross Homeless Center: One Month Later
SUMMARY: The homeless population at Mercy Cross has decreased from over 100 to fewer than 50, thanks to significant cleanup and support efforts. In one month, over 30 dumpsters of trash were removed, and around two dozen people found housing. Security is now present 24/7 to combat issues like drug use. Currently, 42 individuals reside on-site, following rules and progressing towards independent living. The day center offers showers, laundry, computers for job searches, and will soon provide medical care. The goal is to treat the homeless with dignity and offer them a second chance. The diocese is requesting the city build a gate for property monitoring.
The homeless population at Mercy Cross has shrunk from more than a hundred to less than fifty.

St. Martin East Elementary teacher receives classroom makeover after winning contest

Work on Beachview Bridge paused to move water, sewer lines
SUMMARY: Much-needed repairs to the Beach View Drive bridge in Gulf Park Estates are delayed until water and sewer lines are moved. The bridge is currently suitable for cars and SUVs but not for large school buses and trucks. County road crews are ready to reinforce the bridge, but a private utility company must first relocate the attached water and sewer mains. Jackson County Supervisor Randy Bosar noted challenges due to the utility's recent change in ownership. The bridge will eventually be rebuilt as part of a widening plan for Gulf View Drive, with the first phase beginning soon. The construction contract may be awarded at Monday's board meeting.
