Mental Health Awareness Month: State Legislation to address mental health issues

SUMMARY: Welcome back, everyone. This month, we’ve focused on mental health each Monday. Today, State Representative Kevin Felshire joins us to discuss legislative efforts on this issue. Felshire, passionate about improving mental health outcomes, has seen growing support among lawmakers. Key initiatives include HB 1640, revising mental health procedures, and the 988 crisis hotline established by the 2022 House Bill 732 for mental health emergencies. Additionally, a Senate bill has created a task force to address mental health gaps in K-2 and postsecondary education. Felshire also highlighted county-level support and state-level efforts by the Department of Mental Health. Future goals include improving HB 1640 and focusing on data-driven resource allocation.
