Menendez brothers’ case back in court for hearing regarding petition for review of new evidence
SUMMARY: A California judge will decide today if new evidence warrants reexamining the convictions of Eric and Lyle Menendez, who were convicted over 30 years ago for murdering their parents. Their attorneys argue they killed in self-defense after years of abuse, seeking a reduction to voluntary manslaughter charges. The hearing will set a schedule for future court dates, potentially leading to resentencing. Governor Gavin Newsom recently denied clemency, leaving the case to the new district attorney, Nathan Hawkman, who will begin his term in December. Despite public interest, there are only 16 public seats available for the hearing.
Erik and Lyle Menendez’s infamous case will be back in front of a judge on Monday for a hearing regarding the brothers’ habeas corpus petition, which was filed last year for a review of new evidence not presented at trial.
